It's a vibe! The town of Ponte Mathurin, Rodrigues, came to a standstill this morning, as 240 athletes marched through, waving their county's flag with pride, after playing a few micro-social soccer games with children at the town's immaculate stadium. The Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues; Louis Serge Clair GCSK welcomed Expedition Africa teams, volunteers, staff and all that have contributed to making this event a possibility, let alone a success. The emotions of gratitude and love filled the atmosphere, through Heidi Muller's speech, dedicating this year's Expedition Africa to a special friend and incredible adventure racer; Julian Samson of team Powerbar Swiss. A truly loved human, who is sorely missed by his adventure family. Tears were shed by many throughout the opening ceremony, as organisers, photographers, volunteers and athletes were overwhelmed by the love that goes into an event, as unique as Expedition Africa: Rodrigues. The island community showcased their true Rodrigan hospitality, providing teams and guests with an endless supply of traditional treats, coffee and glasses of homemade lemonade, after their National Anthem was proudly sung whilst holding hands and swaying, epitomizing the unity this island boasts. Heidi Muller's #allaboutlove outlook on the organisation of Expedition Africa can be found naturally all over the island of Rodrigues. The people of this tiny island live in beautiful harmony, sharing everything they have, all for the benefit of the people collectively. At a first glance, this incredible island is alluring for its natural exquisite beauty, its vast terrain and tropical turquoise waters, however, will now be known by the Expedition Africa tribe for its wholesome and humble community that make Rodrigues, truly, worth the visit. The Expedition Africa: Rodrigues pre-race program officially came to close this evening at 17h00, after all athletes cycled from Ponte Mathurin to T1; in Mourouk. Teams gathered around the grounds of the Ebony Hotel, enjoying a local beer or juice, breathing in the salty calm breeze, before the storm (Race Day) arrives tomorrow. All 60 teams will line up at 13h00 on the Mourouk beach for the start of this year's 29 legged expedition race, which will kick off with a traditional Rodrigan regatta.
